Launched in 2009, the Carmignac Gestion Photojournalism Award aims to bring light to events and areas of the world neglected by the mainstream media, except during periods of conflict.

Each year, photojournalists are invited to submit proposals for the production of a reportage lasting several months on a specific subject directly relateing to current affairs. In 2009, the Award focused on Palestine, and on Pashtunistan in 2010. Last year, photographers were asked to concentrate on Zimbabwe.

"The selected areas are the stage for intense human suffering and often epicentres of extreme violence with global consequences," say the organisers. "The proposed topic for the 2012 Carmignac Gestion Photojournalism Award is Chechnya."

Photographers have until 30 September to submit their detailed proposals. The entries will be judged by a panel that includes journalist and curator Christian Caujolle; Daphné Anglès of The New York Times; Agence France-Presse's managing editor Marielle Eudes; gallery director Walter Keller; photojournalists Mari Bastashevski, Elena Chernyschova and Robin Hammond; as well as British Journal of Photography's Olivier Laurent.

The winner will have until March 2013 to submit his finished project, which will then be exhibited in Paris and published as a monograph. The Carmignac Gestion Foundation will also purchase four photographs resulting from the assignment.

Previous winners include Kai Wiedenhöfer, Massimo Berruti and Robin Hammond.
