This coming Wednesday November 30th, at 6pm ALBA is co-sponsoring a symposium on the Spanish Civil War Photographs of Agustí Centelles at the King Juan Carlos I Center in New York City (53 Washington Sq S), where the exhibit Centelles in_edit_oh! is up for another couple of weeks.  With the participation of Sebastiaan Faber (Oberlin College, Department of Hispanic Studies; Chair of ALBA); Jordana Mendelson (NYU, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, visual studies specialist); José María Naharro-Calderón (University of Maryland, Department of Spanish and Portuguese); and Juan Salas (NYU, Graduate Student, specialist on photography and the Spanish Civil War). Moderated by Jim Fernández (NYU, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, ALBA’s Vice-Chair). Respondent: Susie Linfield (NYU, Department of Journalism). Free and open to the public.
This is the first exhibit in the United States of 40 photographs Centelles took in Barcelona in the first few hours after the military uprising on July 19, 1936; his photo-reportage throughout the war; and the extraordinary photographs taken at the French concentration camp in Bram. Centelles, whose archive was purchased by the government in Madrid to be included in the national Civil War archive in Salamanca, is considered the most important among the Spanish photographers covering the Civil War. Last year, his portrait of a young black volunteer–included in the exhibit–set off a global detective search. The photography show at the KJCC is accompanied by an exhibit at NYU’s Tamiment Library of original international magazines featuring some of Centelles’ images.
